Cobham High Street is closed off this morning because a man was found in a pool of blood in the early hours outside Farrants/Cobham Travel. Police say the road will be closed for a few more hours, and possibly all day depending on news from the hospital where the un-named man is critical. Forensics are on the scene.
The High Street is closed to cars and pedestrians between Hogshill Lane and Church Street and all shops will remain closed until the High Street reopens.
EDIT: the High Street is now open
Update: sources suggest the man has now died and the death is being treated a murder.
We’re not sure whether the police are treating this as murder an assault or as a road traffic incident, or what, but we will keep digging for you and let you know ASAP. What is clear is that the police were on the scene about 4:30am and the man is definitely a resident of Churchfield House in Cobham. More to follow but keep posting your thoughts and any news you might hear about this tragic incident.
EDIT Comments are now closed but drop me an email if you’ve got anything worth adding.

OMG! I drove to work this morning at about 8am and didn’t even notice that. Can’t believe that. I’ll see if I can get hold of my Uncle later to see if he knows anything more. If it happened outside his shop, then he must have been called in early unless he was already there doing te papers.
I left for work at 7am this morning, coming from Anyards Road, and the whole high street was blocked off. There were 4 or 5 police cars, a forensics guy in a white boiler suit and some cameras on tripods. Seems it happened near the Lemon Tree/Adrenalin Sports end of the High Street. I had to spin round and drive back past the skate park and then up Church street to get to the Station…
The CCTV camera points up that way. Surely that would have picked up anything that happened. Poor guy. Here’s hoping he makes it
I drove past on my way to the station at about ten past 8 and there was still a lot of activity but it seemed to centred in front of Nat West Bank and the incident tape was across the gate to the right of the building. Lots of forensics people still about.
There is a small story on the BBC Surrey news page. Apparently the man was taken to St Peter’s Chertsey after being found at about 4.30am with a head injury and is in a very serious condition. What on earth could have happened? I hope he makes it too.
He dies? Holy moly…….. I hope they find out what happened and catch whoever did it.
i love farrants
I just spoke to my Gran and my other uncle and they don’t know any more than anyone else. Apparantly he was found by the Abbey National staff when they opened up the branch this morning at about 8am.
I cant believe everything that is happening in Cobham recently, Cobham used to be so nice but now people are to scared to go out late at night, I have to get my partner to walk the dogs as u really dont know who is out there. They must be able to catch the people who do these things as cobham has CCTV, COBHAM SHOULD BE COVERED ALL OVER WITH CCTV to catch the people who did it
Has anyone asked cobham kebab man whether he saw anything!?! he’s a legend!
i love the homestead!
Would have happened well after Ali went home for the night. Like I said before, there is a camera there that faces up towrds NatWest so that must have caught something. I’ll see if I ca can get any more info from various family members and update if I hear anything useful.
its so sad that man could have kids and some sick twisted person kills him for what i hope they catch this person and throw away the keys. Cobham use to be a safe place but now its all rape and murder makes me want to move and ive lived here all my live.
i love the homestead and the crazy woman owner lady.. shes amazing. also i agree with captain cool, ask ali the kebab man. he might know what went down.
he does awesome chicken kebabs aswell
I’ve lived here all my life too and i feel the same
Don’t feel like I can stroll down the High Street at night on my own anymore. So sad……
London News/BBC Breakfast news this morning announced that Cobham High Street was closed and police were at the scene.
What a shock!
I blame Chelsea.
Just been past, you can still get in to the bank (natwest) but taped off from the side of the building all the way to half way across the abbey. Forensics are still there and they are appealing for witnesses.
they say the body was found early this morning long before that as the road was closed at 6
Does anyone know who the poor man was yet?
At least oxshott isn’t so bad well i say that and someone was stabbed her around Christmas too. I lived in cobham up until 7 years ago but mu mum’s still over there and it scares me i cant go out there late anymore either I wouldn’t want to leave my kids without a mum.
no news yet
I haven’t wandered around Cobham late at night for a long time now. Too scared. And that’s sad because it used to feel like such a safe place. I think it’s because London is creeping ever closer to Cobham.
Here it says that it was a “serious head injury” – no mention of death.
http://www.thisissurreytoday.co.uk/leatherhead/Man-head-injury/article-943392-detail/article.html
BBC says the same thing: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/surrey/8022033.stm
It could have been between two people who know each other, rather than a random attack, so no need to barricade yourelves in your houses yet.
That said the chelsea phenomenon has caused an awful lot of monied-up chavs to move into cobham which has definitely brought the tone down.
The latest from the high street is that he died in hospital from his wounds but that may not have been updated as yet.
“I think it’s because London is creeping ever closer to Cobham.”
LadyCroft that is the most ridiculous thing i’ve ever heard!!
No it’s not! The suburbs are slowly getting swalloed up as London gets bigger. I’m not saying that London isn’t a safe place to live, it just feels like Cobham is becoming more and more like London.
cheers
What’s with all the fear? Cobham too dangerous to walk the street? Come on…
And why has the time-stamp on these posts not adjusted for BST yet?
That just adds insult to injury.
Apparantly the man lived in Churchfield sheltered accommodation and has only been there for 4 weeks. Terrible. My friend’s mum works at Churchfield and was woken up at 6am by the police asking questions as he is a tenant there.
And as for Cobham being “dangerous”????? I don’t think so!!!!! We live in a lovely area and are very lucky. Imagine living in some of London’s boroughs – especially the large coucil estates. It’s society in general that has changed.
Where is Churchfield?
I’m shocked at whats happened but as for Cobham being unsafe, that is b*ll*cks!! I grew up in Cobham/Oxshott and moved back to Cobham in September last year. Previously I lived for 12 years in Wimbledon/Earlsfield/Tooting areas and I can tell you that Cobham is a crime-free paradise compared to South West London! Why on earth anyone would fell unsafe walking late at night in Cobham, I just don’t know.
All i’m saying is that it doesn’t feel as safe as it used to. I was born here and have lived here for all of my nearly *ahem* 30 years and it’s just not the same. It’s still way safer than most other places. I feel sad that I don’t feel as safer here as I used to.
And Churchfield house? Poor man was probably just out for a stroll last night. Do we know if someone else did it or whether he might have just fallen badly?
According to sources, they have checked the c.v and it was a mugging. As i say this is not set in stone. But apparently the man was mugged, and i am guessing hit his head, but at the scene it looks as if he could of fallen into the cobham travel door as it is smashed. Whcih could of resulted in said head injuries
“All i’m saying is that it doesn’t feel as safe as it used to”. I would definitely agree with that, I think it is still VERY safe, but not AS safe. Its a sad state of affairs if people are out getting mugged at 4am, together with the recent shop robberies and the attack on the lady a few weeks ago.
Apparently he withrew cash at 1:30 and the body was found by a postman
“I would definitely agree with that, I think it is still VERY safe, but not AS safe.” – exactly what i was trying to say! Thank you!
None of this suprises me, my brother got beaten up kicked in the head n ribs repeatedly all cos some idiots were on drugs and felt like beating an innocent person. The police have still done nothing, it wouldnt suprise me if it was the same people. No one is safe anywhere anymore
The postman told me this morning that it was a man in his 60′s and he had been stabbed… I personally reckon it was the Circus Pikeys!
He was stabbed in the head. no traffic accident. it was pure murder.
your face is pure murder
“No one is safe anywhere anymore”
Well let’s just all hide in our attics then. The biggest thing to fear is fear itself. Your own trousers are a hundred times more likely to kill you than a murderer.
“Your own trousers are a hundred times more likely to kill you than a murderer.”
Brilliant.
what you on about charlie j. the poor bloke got stabbed and now is dead and yhou come out with this rubbish.
it could off been any one who done it. but would not surprise me if it was a local streetrat from one of the estates
We cant all be scared to leave our houses anymore – just use your heads. Dont leave your house without telling someone where you are and where you will be. If you are walking late at night on your own or even with someone else, try and carry something that can be used to defend yourself. Not a bat or anything like that but my personal choice is my keys or even some perfume/aftershave – just as painful in the eyes, I imagine, as pepper spray!
This is something that isn’t the norm in cobham thats why its more shocking, but I’m actually more grateful that this isn’t ‘just another incident’ as i’m sure would be the case in many other towns.
Oh and Tony Rocker Horror lets hope you never wake to find out something like this has happened to anyone in your family. Inconsiderate scumbag.
GO SAM I AGREE. NO RESPECT TO THE POOR MAN AND HIS FAMILY.
Well said Sam, on both counts. This is not the time OR the place to be making comments like that. So you couldn’t get your newspaper – big deal. In case you hadn’t noticed, something quite awful happened. Or did you miss that. Idiot.
Chance it could be connected with this ?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/surrey/8022539.stm
Man run over and beaten up in Ewell 2 pretty violent attacks in 2 pretty unviolent areas not that far from each other on the same night…
look we’r sitting here at work reading all youtr comments, the facts are that a man has been killed, we dont know who it is & the homestead shut years ago lady croft. poor man, im sure we’v all suffered a loss in our lives so lets spare a thought for his family. we can have an opinion on the ‘street rats’ when the killer has been officially confirmed!
Tony Rocker Horror you f*cking sicko is that all your interested in is your stupid newspaper have some compassion you complete and utter p*rick.
Sorry. I know the Homestead shut years ago – doesn’t mean it’s not missed!
We should, indeed, all spare a thought for the man’s family. Maybe we could leave some flowers for something? Not sure what you do when awful things like this happen.
As for Tony Rocker Horror – just ignore it and it’ll go away.
no worries, its just such a shock as its all so close to home.
He probably thought he was being funny.. some people have serious flaws in their personalities. I do hope I can get to the newspaper when your obituary is in there Tony Rocker Horror.
well said Sam – he isn’t funny he is a wanker with a sick sense of humour.
I think, and hope, he has got the message now. It frustrates me that he’s managed to take away the focus from something really awful and shift it onto him for stupid, heartless comments.
I don’t know what is done in this situation either – I just hope the police are able to establish exactly what happened and that if it is a murder enquiry, as it is widely believed to be, that someone is brought to justice over this.
I work at a local shop in Cobham and have had customers gossiping about this all day. I have heard so many theorys as to what happened. I have also spoken to a Policeman on the scene who has confirmed that it was NOT a stabbing. The guy WAS from ChurchField House and was in his 50s, The poor guy has only been a Cobham resident for a few weeks. According to staff at Farrants there CCTV saw the man and another guy about the same age walk past at about 1.30am very very drunk. I have also heard that the guy is now dead. And that apparently a local man from the Northfield Road Estate behind the Police Station has been arrested due to CCTV footage from the clock tower opposite Barclys Bank which was pointed in the direction. The body was also found outside Cobham Travel and at the moment the scene has not been cleaned up due to Forensics still testing the site.
his name is brian and he has a black labrador he walks around drinkin in the pubs and he is in his 60′s he died at st peters hospital and they think it was either assault or he just simply got drunk and fell. he was found at about 1.30am police srrived at about 4.30am
OMG, i know him. He’s been a fixture in Cobham for years. That’s really sad…….
Thanks NuttyOne and DAGO for the updates.
That’s really sad – what will happen to his dog then…
(
That should have been
how do you know is brian i herad it was the bloke who always wears the army trs and walks everywhere
brain was a gd man leave him in peace now
do we know who has been arrested yet
no it aint him he always walks around near were i live and gos in a ft were i live i saw him about 9ish this mornin
According to BBC Surrey Radio, as at 16:00, St Peters Hospital were saying that the man is still alive, let us hope that all of the speculation above, is just that and that he does indeed live.
thanks for that
he is dead my girlfriend asked the old bill who was outside the shop.
how sure are we its brian as i thought he was new to cobham and brian has been here years
It wasn’t the army guy i saw him walking around today.
I was wondering why there was so much traffic and as i saw the police vans and tape the radio went…’ and in cobham high street…’ so sad.
and i’ve heard a lot of people saying it was someone from the northfield estate
i heard that to and wyndham ave
apparently it isnt that man with the dog cos he lives up nearer stoke not in ‘churchfield’????
Seen Brian drinking in the Running mare today so he’s doing well for a dead man!!!!!
thats what i thought so does anyone really know for sure and who did it
17:00 News still advises that a man is at St. Peters Hospital, where he has life threatening injuries, he has NOT died yet according to the media, can we stop writing this poor man off!
last I heard someone had been arrested and being questioned
surely if the window had smashed he would have set off the alarm and according to my info it happened around 1-1.30 and he wasn’t found until 4.30
It wasnt Brian, the poor bloke has had people going up to him all day asking if he is dead, but he is definitely alive and well. The man in question, was a new comer to cobham, and i can garuntee that 99% of you will never of seen or heard of him. If it is the person who it is being touted as, he was drinking at the running mare pub, got completely hammered, and something happend to him on the high street be it a mugging, whatever. If you make your way down to the running mare pub this evening, i am sure the staff will be happy to fill you in on all the latest rumour mongering going on.
that sounds more like it
they left yesterday afternoon
totally agree
it cant be he lives down the tilt
thank god
IT IS NOT BRIAN HE IS ALIVE IVE SEEN HIM JUST KNOW.
Oh, well thats good news about it not being Brian and even better news that whoever the poor man is, he’s still alive. Lets hope he pulls through.
LOL – I know it’s not funny but this gossip trail is making me laugh!! Poor Brian, and poor real victim.
i totally aggree its not that i wish him dead or anything i am just bloody nosey
I know what you mean – who actually goes up to an alive person and asks them if they’re dead?!
And any small town like Cobham will have a whirlwind rumour tree. Let’s just hope the man pulls through so he can tell the police who attacked him, if that’s what indeed did happen.
he wasn’t stabbed
He fell in the river, confirmed. He fell in the river and got pulled out by a local cobhamonian, and then up the street whatever happened outside farrants happened. Poor dude.
These posts have got ever more ridiculous. Everyone is obviously gossiping and it’s becoming Chinese Whispers – to the point where it was “definitely” a man named Brian with a black labrador!
I have never seen so many people ‘strolling casually’ down the High St, Starbucks must have taken a fortune today judging by the people casually sipping coffee…outside! The police are still asking for witnesses so as of yet the whole incident seems pretty unconfirmed as to what actually happened. I would just ignore rumour and wait until the facts emerge. Whatever happened wasn’t pleasant and was either a very unfortunate accident, or something more sinister.
I agree with Sam! We can all speculate till the cows come home & it’s pointless! Lets wait until the facts come out & not point the finger at certain social groups or sections of Cobham society!
Having lived in Cobham for nearly 11 years, this is a very rare occurance & I personally still feel safe at night to walk down the High Street should I choose to! Having lived in Fulham & Kensington for years, Cobham seems like a walk in the park & although they’re are elements of change due to certain publicity of Cobham over the years, I still feel that short of moving to the middle of nowhere, this is (by todays standards) a relatively safe area to live in! Try 7 months in Bromley, like we had too last year when we where in between house moves & you might be persuaded to think otherwise – that was like living in a flippin nightmare compared to the odd beer can, upturned flower pot or off licence raid!!! There where 11 stabbings 6 of them fatal that I read about in the local Bromley paper within 7 months…..Cobham is not so bad, trust me
i highly doubt it who told you that?
pffft, people who are spreading rumors are sad really sad, its someone’s life we are talking about here, i am 14 years old and more mature than a matter of you.
i was on the bus to school this morning and i saw the crime scene with the tape and i saw the blood all over the floor and up onto abbeys little path thing there was men with boiler suits and camera and 4-5 police vans.
and on my way home from school nothing had changed the blood was still there but congealed and people where browsing the high street to see what had gone on. i overheard a bunch of chavs saying.. go get changed quick we can go and look at all the blood. i think people like that.. are sick.
get back to me on this guys.
yeah i agree with iamme.
one of my mums friends said that is was a trap that was stabed in the head because the old bear was open until late. thats is all i have listened to
It cant be someone we know already as he was a new resident. and i highly doubt he was pulled out the river when the shop was all smashed up and blood on that shop.
not spreading rumours, but i reckon he was drunk or out for a walk. maybe took out some money and got robbed for it.
poor man.
drove past the scene today, still bloody. niiiceee
the window was not broken
the bottom of the door window is smashed looks like head went in he got up then collapesed
well i got told from my friend that he was drunk in the running mare and to people walked him back to cobham high street and they got to the river and he said its fine here then he walked into cobham high street at 1:30, Then he got to cobahm travel and he saw a man and they had a argument and he got pushed into the window on the cobham travle and cut his head on the glass and he fell and he lost 7 pints of blood.
i was told that a trap got stabed
OK, I now have the truth from an official souce. He was indeed drunk and fell over, head first into the Cobham Travel door. He passed out and was found in the early hours. He’s still critical in Hospital but is still alive, thank goodness.
Does anybody actually have the facts? I have lived in cobham for 30+ years,it’s been gettin worse for some time. Yob’s!
On a brighter note I could murder a kebab! Ali!!!!!!!
“OK, I now have the truth from an official souce. He was indeed drunk and fell over, head first into the Cobham Travel door. He passed out and was found in the early hours. He’s still critical in Hospital but is still alive, thank goodness” If that is true, why were forensic people back there about two hours ago and why are there still 3 policemen there and a police car, as of 10 minutes ago! It must be more serious than a bloke falling over into a door – the police would have cleaned up and left by now if that was the case.
But it would be far nicer if it turns out he did just fall over instead of get stabbed/beaten up/whatever!
Does anyone actually know what happened?
