Retail-jobs---Sainsburys-announce-new-retail-jobs

What do you think about Sainsburys new giant lettering visible from the A3 as of today?

The four foot high lettering has already described as looking like “an American style strip mall” by blogging Cobham councillor James Browne.

Apparently they’ve been a bit naughty and put the lettering up before they were given permission.

They could be ordered to yank the letters down on July 27 by local councillors.

UPDATE: The councillor has been told Sainsburys have been given 14 days to pull the lettering down themselves or face the consequences

  1. What is all the fuss about? More jobsworths making themselves feel important I suppose

  2. Doesn’t bother me in the slightest. And isn’t the whole point of having it so you you can see it from the road?!

  3. Elmbridge’s planning officers and councillors have a long tradition of nodding at hideous planning proposals through and getting their knickers in a twist over inconsequential things like a Sainsbury’s sign. They will NEVER be forgiven for allowing the dreadful development of Between Streets. Please don’t credit either group with any care for Cobham.

  4. i think it look’s great! why all the fuss?because it’s in cobham!

  5. what’s wrong wth Between Streets?

  6. The lettering might not bother those who don’t live anywhere near the supermarket, but judging by my postbag and the 50-odd signature petition received by Elmbridge it really bothers those who will have to look at it every day when they open their curtains.

As for Mr Macsen’s post – you are entitled to your opinion and personally I have a very thick skin. However I know my 4 Cobham council colleagues very well and to say they have no care for the town is grossly unfair. I can only assume, being charitable, that you do not realise that only 3 of the 10 member West Area planning sub-committee represent Cobham. Therefore proposals sometimes get through despite the best efforts of the Cobham councillors to oppose them.

  7. It bothers me greatly as I live near to the store. The back of my home is virtually orange from this massive and totally unecessary sign. It won’t bother anyone whose home is not affected – but for those of us in Riverview Gardens it is a different matter. Words cannot describe the week we have just had. Sainsburys have no consideration for anyone but themselves.

During this past week, we have been stopped and interogated driving down Bridgeway to our homes – every day, yet I don’t believe that Sainsburys own Bridgeway. We have had builders swearing behind our fence and had to shut windows so children don’t hear. We have had building work at night, at weekends, early in the morning .. I could write a book!

However when you are a big chain like that it seems you have your own laws and you can just do as you please.

  8. The same thing happened when Waitrose refurbed. I was living in Oakdene Parade and the building work went on at all hours of the day and night. In a matter of days, the view from my kitchen went from not being able to see the car park at all to having a 2-storey car park! I feel your pain Katy!

I kept complaining, as did other residents on Oakdene Parade and we were rewarded after 6 months with £20 worth of Waitrose vouchers. I sent mine back in disgust and told them i’d prefer a cleaning crew to come round and clean my house of all the dust and grime they’d created.

  9. Theend of civilisation!! Shock…Horror….SAINSBURY’s HAVE GIVEN UP THEIR REDUCED COUNTER IN THE NEW STORE. What do they now do with out of date food? Give it to the poor people of Cobham maybe? It used to be the height of my day to go up at 8 in the evening, not having a clue what I was going to have for dindins…and be pleasantly surprised by whatever I found!! Oh well….back to Waitrose for me then!
